The tour begins at the Northern Gate of the Aurelian Walls and goes all the way up to the site of the Stadium of Domitian. The Stadium of Domitian had long ago lent its land to the building of the Piazza Navona. The first sight on the way are the Spanish Steps. The steps are located between the foot of the Piazza di Spagna and the Trinita dei Monti Church at the apex. The building of these steps costed a massive 20,000 scudi back in the day. They were built to connect the church and the Spanish embassy in the year 1723. It is also the place where the very popular poet John Keats used to liveAt the bottom of the steps there is the curious fountain La Barcaccia designed by Pietro Bernini, father of the better known Gian Lorenzo bernini. The construction of this fountain was decided by Pope Urban VIII Barberini to commemorate all dead during the flood in the late XVI century. In the same area sits the famous Trevi Fountain that has also been featured in many movies and is considered as a good luck spot. The Corinthian columns of Hadrian’s Temple are next on our way to Navona Square. This brings us to the Campus Maritus. The temple has a very long history and has ancient origins. Although not much remains, the surviving side colonnade has been incorporated into the Piazza di Pietra. Plans of reconstruction are being devised. The last stop on the way comes in the form of the massive Pantheon. Located close to the Roman Forum it is by far the best preserved Roman Monument of all time. The coffered on the inside walls never cease to amaze people who visit. The Pantheon has had several uses but the late 7 th century saw the latest change as it was a church dedicated to St. Mary. It’s origins date back to the reign of Augustus. It has gone through several earthquakes and was refurbished Emperor Hadrian.
The tour ends at the climactic Piazza Navona where the guide talks about the careful Baroque and Neo classical architecture
