Officially named Archbasilica of the Most Holy Savior, St. John the Baptist and Evangelist, it is the oldest and ranks first among the major basilicas, and holds the title of ecumenical mother church, root and center of the all catholic churches in the world. An inscription on the façade, Christo Salvatore, dedicates the Lateran as Archbasilica of the Most Holy Saviour, for all patriarchal basilicas are dedicated to Christ himself. As the cathedral of the Bishop of Rome, containing the papal throne (Cathedra Romana) the official place of pope’s teaching, it ranks above all other churches in the Catholic Church, even above St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. St. Mary Major, built over the pagan temple of Cybele, is the only Roman basilica that retained the core of its original structure, left intact despite several additional construction projects and damage from the earthquake of 1348. It contains important mosaics and elaborate tombs and sumptuous chapels erected by the popes in the 16C and 17 C. It is the largest and most important place of prayer dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Named also St. Mary of the Snow, in memory of a famous snow that happened in August, 5 of the year 356, or St. Mary of the Crib because of the relics of the manger of Jesus in here preserved into a silver urn. After a short lunch break, we will visit St. Paul Outside The Walls, the largest church in Rome after St. Peter’s. The church commemorates the martyrdom of of St. Paul and is believed to contain he Apostole’s tomb. The church of the three emperors revealed us the genius of a great saint: the apostle of the pagan people and the elected disciple of Christ after he met him along the way to Damascus. Inside It dominates the great mosaics of the apse with a relevant Christ blessing and saints. A unique way to know the life of a great apostle that brought Christ’s word all around the world. Then, we will visit the true heart of Christianity, St. Peter in Vatican, the most important Roman Catholic church in the world and is one of the most visited places in Rome. It is a composite work of some of the greatest artists of the Sixteenth century, and a masterpiece of the italian Renaissance. Orientated towards the west and approached through its monumental piazza, the church has its fitting culmination in Michelangelo’s dome. Built on the Rock, St. Peter, on the place where the prince of the Apostle was buried, it’s a unique place where Religion, Faith and Art are deeply related. The tour ends at St. Peter’s square where the guides talks about the private apartment of the Pope with the window where the pope comes out for the blessing and the place of the chimney at Sistine Chapel’s roof.
